Convincing your elderly parents to accept that they need in-home care can be difficult. They may be fearful of losing their privacy or their independence and it is likely you will be met with some resistance. Here are some ideas and suggestions that may be helpful as you approach this subject and show them the benefits of in-home care.
1. Observe
Before you approach the subject take time to observe. Note the things they are still able to do well and those areas where they struggle. Do they need help with household tasks? If yes, which ones? Do they need help with grocery shopping or remembering to take their medication? Once you have a good idea of what is needed, prioritize the list so that you know what your goal is.
2. Broach the subject
It may be easiest to start a conversation about in-home care by expressing how it would help not only them but you as well. Explain why it would make you feel better and lower your stress if you knew that an additional caregiver was there to help. Start small, suggest that you find someone to just help with meals, laundry or grocery shopping. If that goes well they may be more willing to allow someone to eventually help with personal care as well.
3. Get other opinions
Your elderly parents may be more inclined to listen to a trusted professional (their doctor) or family friend. Sometimes an outside opinion is less difficult to accept and they are less likely to resist the change. Ask someone to speak to them who may have a better chance of helping them see the benefits and importance of in-home care.
4. Trial Period
It might work well to just try it out for a short time. A good opportunity for this may be when you are going out of town or on a vacation. Knowing that their normal helper or caregiver is not available may make them more agreeable to bringing in outside assistance. Knowing that it is short term may make things more palatable. Once they "try it out" they may find that they like the caregiver and don't mind having someone to lend an extra helping hand.
