Most older adults want to stay in their own home for as long as they are able. However, safety can become a concern for many. Here are a few common safety issues that can occur around the home and solutions that may help to prevent accidents. Taking these preventative measures can allow aging adults to continue living at home for as long as possible.
One of the common reasons that seniors find themselves in the hospital is falling or tripping. This can happen to anyone, however seniors are not able to recover as easily and can experience irreversible problems from a seemingly small tumble. There are things that can be done to reduce the chances of this happening. First and foremost, make sure there are no tripping hazards in their living areas. Repair loose boards or carpet, get rid of throw rugs, remove all things that are on the floor unnecessarily (like boxes, laundry baskets, or electrical cords). Next, make sure there are railings for each stairway. A railing on both sides is ideal if possible. You can take things further by repairing sidewalks that have lifted or cracked, fixing broken steps or thresholds, adding grip tape to any slippery surfaces like a bathtub, etc. Consider adding grab bars in the shower or by the toilet.
It is always a good idea to invest in some kind of medical alert system, especially if the person is living alone. Having a medical alert device like a bracelet or necklace on at all times means that if a problem occurs someone can come to their aid at any time of the day or night. In the case of a fall, it is not always possible to reach a phone and call for help. There are many different companies that offer this service and the prices vary. Finding a system that works for you will give the whole family peace of mind.
The kitchen offers a whole host of possible dangers for anyone, especially those who are starting to become forgetful. Forgetting to turn off the stove, or breaking a dish/glass can be serious for some. Make things safer by replacing glass dishes and cups with plastic, have meals brought in, add safety mechanisms to anything that is problematic, disconnect the garbage disposal and add night lights for times when a late night snack is wanted. Make sure there are smoke alarms in the house and check the batteries to be sure they are operational. Having someone come in every once in a while to clear outdated and rotten food items may be a good idea. Oftentimes aging people may forget when they purchased something or are not able to reach items that have been pushed to the back of the fridge or cabinet.
Both medications and toxic products, such as cleaning supplies, can be very dangerous if used incorrectly. Locking up or throwing out any cleaning supplies that may be harmful and purchasing all non toxic items is a great option. This will allow the person to keep their independence and still clean and use their own products without causing any harm to themselves. Having someone deliver daily medications can be a good option for older declining adults. Another good option would be to fill a weekly pill organizer, use a medication machine, or speak to your pharmacy about different options they may have when filling the prescriptions. Setting an alarm at the time they need to take their pills can help them to remember and limit confusion.
All of these precautions should be taken at the first signs that the aging adult may be struggling with memory and physical abilities. Hiring someone to help around the house and make sure the environment is safe and clean can be very beneficial. In addition, the extra help can relieve a lot of stress for friends and family.
