Trying to decide which type of care is best suited for a loved one can be a challenging and overwhelming task. Two common options to consider for a loved one are in-home care and assisted living care.
In-home care allows for the individual to continue living in their own home with the help of a paid caregiver. The caregiver will assist your loved one in their daily tasks, such as preparing meals, grooming, housework and much more.
Assisted living, unlike in-home care, requires the one in need to leave their own home and live in a place where there are others who need similar assistance. Depending on the facility that is chosen, different services and levels of care may be provided.
Though both are viable care options, depending on the needs of the individual, there are many advantages to choosing in-home care over assisted living.
Staying in the comfort of home
AARP statistics show that 90% of seniors would prefer to age in their own homes, rather than in an assisted living facility. As people age, change can often become hard and disorienting. Rather than uprooting a loved one from the comfort and safety of home, consider finding a qualified caregiver to come to them.
Most of us feel best when we are in an environment that we are used to - a place where we feel comfortable and happy. We know where things are and how things work. Having old friends and longtime neighbors nearby, provides a sense of security that is irreplaceable.
Having some independence is important too. Getting a little extra help each day can be preferable to feeling completely dependent and useless.
One-on-one Care
When you hire in-home care for your loved one, you are getting tailored care that is specific to the individual's needs and desires. A one-to-one ratio of care allows the caregiver to develop a better relationship and understand the needs of the individual they are assisting. This generally results in a better overall experience.
Often the family of the patient has the ability to select a care provider that fits well with the individual's personality and needs. This can help with strengthening communication and building a greater sense of trust. The caregiver may even begin to feel like a friend or family member over time.
Cost
Finances are another thing to consider when debating what kind of care will work best for your loved one. Depending on how much care the individual will need, in-home care can actually be a more affordable option. If the individual only needs part-time help, hiring someone to come into the home can actually save a great deal of money.
Greater Flexibility
In-home care allows you to hire as little or as much help as the individual needs. It also allows for greater flexibility in the individual's schedule. This way they are able to continue living on a schedule they are used to and not change their familiar routine. Uncle Bob likes dinner at 6pm sharp? No problem!
Spending time with loved ones through their aging years is very important and likely means a lot to them. In-home care allows for family members to visit without being confined to allotted visiting hours and restrictions.
Each of these factors must be taken into serious consideration when making the decision of how to get your loved one the help that they need. Overall, giving the individual the ability to stay in their own home and continue life in a way that they are used to, may be the best solution!
